- 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ½ cup unsalted butter (cut into pats)
- ½ cup vegetable Shortening
- 1 ½ tsps pure vanilla extract
- 2 tsps Almond extract
- 1 large egg (plus 1 large egg yolk)
- ½ cup slivered almonds
Preparation steps

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with parchment.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda. Add butter pats and shortening. Mix until the dough is crumbly. In a separate bowl, whisk together the vanilla and almond extracts, the egg and the yolk. Add this to the dough mixture, mixing until the dough comes together.

Roll the dough into 1 1/2-inch balls, and place them on the prepared baking sheets, spacing about 1 1/2-inches apart.. Flatten to about 1/2-inch thickness.

Press 5 almonds in a star pattern into the center of each cookie. Bake the cookies for about 16 minutes, until they feel set but and indentation will remain if pressed in the center. Do not over bake. Remove from oven, and allow cookies to cool on baking sheets.
