Preparation steps

Peel onion and dice finely. Peel garlic. Heat 4 tablespoons oil and fry the onion until soft. Add the tomatoes and garlic. Season with 4 teaspoons sugar and the salt, pepper and fresh nutmeg.

Bring to a brief boil, then simmer, covered, over low heat for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and season with salt and pepper. Stir in basil leaves, cover and let stand briefly before serving.
