To make the clowns more secure you can insert a wooden cocktail stick through the centre.

Preparation steps

1.
For the cupcakes: heat the oven to 190°C (170° fan) 375°F gas 5. Place 12 paper cases in a 12 hole bun tin.
2.
Whisk together all the ingredients until smooth and blended.
3.
Spoon into the paper cases and bake for about 15 minutes until well risen and firm to the touch. Place on a wire rack and leave to cool completely.
4.
For the icing: sift the icing sugar in to a bowl and beat in the water and food colouring to give a thick coating consistency.
5.
Spoon the icing over the cakes, allowing it to run down the cakes.
6.
Cut the marshmallows into small pieces. Starting with the shoes, build up overlapping layers of different colours, pressing the cut ends onto the marshmallows, to stick. Dampen slightly if necessary.
7.
Attach the white marshmallow halves to the top for the heads. Press 2 iced biscuits into the sticky backs of the heads.
8.
Add a cut coloured marshmallow to the top of the head for the hat.
9.
Carefully place the clowns on top of the icing.
10.
Pipe a mouth, eyes and eyebrows on the clowns with the piping icing and add a red sweet for the nose.
