Rinse clams well and discard all opened ones.

Cook pasta in boiling salted water until al dente.

Peel onion and chop finely. Heat oil in a pan and saute onion until translucent. Add wine and bring to a boil. Add clams and simmer, covered, for about 5 minutes. Remove clams from the broth (discard all closed ones) and separate about half of clam meat from the shells, chop. Strain broth through a sieve into a pan. Add chopped clams and basil, simmer briefly. Add drained pasta with butter and toss well, season with salt and pepper. Add remaining clams and heat through. Arrange on plates and garnish with basil, serve.
