1 clove garlic cloves (halved)
6 cups waxy potatoes (finely sliced)
1 cup double cream
1 cup grated Cheese (e. g. Gruyère, Emmental)
½ cup Crème fraiche
2 Tbsps freshly chopped Fresh herbs (e. g. marjoram and thyme)
Nutmeg (freshly grated)

Preparation steps

1.
Heat the oven to 180°C (160°C in a fan oven), 375°F, gas 5.
2.
Rub the cut surfaces of the garlic over the inside of a gratin dish. Layer the potatoes in the dish evenly, in an overlapping fashion.

Stir together the cream, cheese, crème fraîche and herbs. Season with salt, ground black pepper and nutmeg and pour over the potatoes. The potatoes should be just covered - add more or less cream as needed.
4.
Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes until golden brown. If desired, switch on the grill for the last 10 minutes to bake the top layer of potatoes crisp and brown.
